Knee Pain When Walking in Coquitlam
Why It Keeps Coming Back (And What Actually Fixes It)
Walking should feel easy. But lately, something feels off.
You’re halfway up the Coquitlam Crunch.Or just walking near Lougheed. And your knee starts to ache.
At first, you ignore it.“It’ll go away.”
But it doesn’t.
So you start avoiding hills. Then stairs. Then even longer walks.
If this sounds familiar, there’s an important question to ask:
👉 Is your knee actually the problem?
The Real Reason Your Knee Hurts When You Walk
(Why Most Treatments Fail)
Most people assume something is wrong inside the knee.
But in many cases, that’s not the real issue.
The knee sits between two key areas:
Your hip
Your ankle
If either of these isn’t moving or stabilizing properly,👉 your knee takes the extra load.
Think of it this way:
👉 Your knee is often the victim — not the cause.
This is why pain shows up in specific situations:
Walking downhill
Going down stairs
Long walks
Your body is signaling that something in the chain isn’t working well.
A Pattern We See All the Time
This type of knee pain usually has a pattern:
Pain going down stairs (not up)
Stiffness after sitting
Ongoing discomfort without swelling
If that’s you,👉 it’s often a movement issue — not damage.
A Simple Test You Can Try
Try this:
Sit on a chair
Lift one foot
Stand up using only one leg
Now watch closely:
Does your knee collapse inward?
Does your pelvis shift or wobble?
📍Single-Leg Sit-to-Stand Test

Watch your knee and pelvis as you stand.
If your knee collapses inward or your pelvis shifts,👉 your hip is not stabilizing properly.
👉 This is one of the most common reasons knee pain shows up when walking.
If this happens, start with a simple exercise like the one below.
A Simple Exercise That Helps
📍Clamshell Exercise for Knee Stability
Lie on your side with your knees bent.
Keep your feet together and slowly open your top knee.Make sure your pelvis stays still (don’t roll backward).
👉 This targets the hip muscles that help keep your knee aligned when you walk.
Start with 10–15 reps, 2–3 sets per side.
If done correctly, this can significantly reduce knee stress during walking.
Why It Doesn’t Go Away (Even After Rest or Treatment)
Many patients tell me:
“I tried resting.”“I did stretching.”“I even did physio.”
But the pain keeps coming back.
Here’s why:
👉 The knee was treated in isolation.
If the real issue is your hip or ankle, treating only the knee won’t solve the problem.

What Actually Helps
In the short term, these can reduce symptoms:
Reduce hills and stairs temporarily
Stretch your hip flexors and calves
Activate your hip stabilizers (like the exercise above)
These help. But they don’t fix the root cause.
